Australian Labradoodles

The Australian Labradoodle is a friendly, smart, low-shedding dog that got its start in Australia. Here's a quick guide to the breed.

Where they come from

Australian Labradoodles were first developed in Australia, where breeders set out to create an allergy-friendly guide dog. Over the years, breeders carefully combined the Labrador Retriever, the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel to build a dog with a steady temperament and a low-shedding coat.

Today's Australian Labradoodles are multigenerational, which means they come from many generations of Labradoodle to Labradoodle breeding.

Sizes

  • Miniature: about 14 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder
  • Medium: about 17 to 20 inches
  • Standard: about 21 to 24 inches

Most Australian Labradoodles weigh somewhere between 15 and 65 pounds, depending on size.

Coat types

  • Fleece: soft and silky, from straight to wavy or loose curls
  • Wool: dense and soft like a lamb's wool, with tighter spiral curls

Both coats are low to no shedding. They do need regular brushing and a trip to the groomer every couple of months.

Colors

Australian Labradoodles come in lots of colors, including cream, chalk, caramel, apricot, gold, red, chocolate, black and parti.

Temperament

They're social, affectionate and smart, and they tend to bond closely with their people. That mix makes them easy to train and a great fit for families. Many also work as therapy and service dogs.

Common questions

Are Australian Labradoodles hypoallergenic?

No dog is 100% allergy-free. Australian Labradoodles have low-shedding coats, so many people with mild allergies do well with them. If you have allergies, it's a good idea to spend time around the breed first.

How big will my puppy get?

It depends on the size. Miniatures are usually 14 to 16 inches tall, mediums 17 to 20 inches, and standards 21 to 24 inches.

How much grooming do they need?

Plan on brushing a few times a week and a professional groom about every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the coat soft and free of mats.

Are they good with kids?

Australian Labradoodles are known for being gentle and social, which makes them a popular family dog. Like any puppy, they do best with early training and supervision around young kids.

When will you have puppies?
